Across abandoned sites in Beijing, names, instructions and classifications remain legible even as the relations that once gave them coherence become harder to recover. Remnants from different uses and periods appear alongside one another without resolving into a single history. Familiar objects offer partial clues to the lives organised around them, but recognition does not necessarily bring the past any closer.
